square peg, round hole syndrome

as i was writing this post i realized that i was guilty.  i know my lovemark.  i know who i am.  and yet and still, here i was trying to put a square peg in a round hole.  we do it all of the time.

  • millennials  are in jobs, majors, or grad school programs that they hate yet they try to convince themselves that they love it because it’s what mommy and daddy want for them.
  • leaders try to force their leaders to mirror their every practice because they have been around the block and they “know how to handle it.”
  • companies/brands see others having success with a certain market and so they try to force themselves into the space in order to “steal share.”
  • companies put people in new positions because of their prior successes but don’t realize the demands of the new job are completely different from the talents needed to perform in the previous role.
  • and the list goes on…

square pegs in round holes.  it may work temporarily, but not in the long run.  and, in these tough economic times, it is only going to get worse for misplaced square pegs.  companies are looking for people who are passionate about what they do and perform, not almost deliver results.  customers are looking for the best value at the best price, not close enough.  now is the time to know who you are and to find a hole that fits you just perfectly.  failure to do so will cause you to be outperformed by the circle pegs who got it right.
