stop killing your dreams and listen
one of my favorite books is paulo cuehlo’s alchemist (if you haven’t read it, i suggest that you do). in it, paulo constantly references the protagonist’s “personal legend,” or that inner voice that guides us to fulfill our purpose. paulo argues that we are all successful in listening to that inner voice as children-it drives our dreams, our hopes, and our aspirations. however, along the way, many of us begin to silence that voice.
all of a sudden those 8-year-old dreams seem too grandiose at 28. or, for whatever reason, it’s just not the “right” time right now. or we make decisions (for things like love) that distract us and take us off of our path. cuehlo writes, “people are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.”
there are many reasons we may choose to silence that voice that encourages us to chase our dreams but the more we silence it the more we forget it ever exists. and when we cease to remember it’s existence we lose the ability to achieve our dreams… and so they die. but there is hope. i personally believe that while it is possible to completely block out your inner voice, i don’t believe one can ever completely stop it from talking. there will always be times when it is determined to speak to you. we just have to listen. if you aren’t hearing anything, you may need to explore ways to retrain yourself to start listening again.
personal note: although i do believe that i am on track for my purpose, this post also serves as an acknowledgement to the voice i heard yesterday. i know there is more for me to accomplish than what i am doing.
