who owns the african-american brand?

Some kids from the Creative Steps Day Care center say club members made racial remarks.

“i-i-i-i-i get that white boy money”

the words that music artist, the-dream, uses to communicate the fact that he is wealthy jars me and i have to listen again to make sure i heard it correctly. and again, “i-i-i-i-i get that white boy money.” and, while it is “all good and dandy’ that the associations of ‘white america’ are typically so positive, it reminds me that the associations for ‘black america” are usually quite the opposite. my mind wanders over some of the recent african-american stories over the last two weeks such as:

the associations, the headlines, the portrayal of african-americans in the media-all of this makes me think that african-americans are probably in the need of a rebranding effort. but who is responsible for managing the african-american brand? whoever you are, please stand up.

I think you are him Detavio! You represent the possibility for all African Americans with your spiritual groundedness, business acumen, and social capital. You have all of the skills, dreams, and talents our ancestors hoped for. If anybody could do it, I think it would be you.

Hope the current brand’s status is reversible. The worst part about the effects of this is there exist Black people who believe the negative brand accurately and truly reflects the quality and value of Black people and its difficult to persuade them to think otherwise. Their concession to such belief manifests itself in low self-esteem, low ethnic “group esteem” and voluntary association with everything stereotypical which leads to some Black people having racist views about themselves….Of course, that perspective depends on your interpretation of the effect of the negative branding—a hotly debated topic between me and my sister who feels differently. (Kim—that’s a challenge to your perpsective—please feel free to counter-comment :) )

a coalition may be necessary. i think it will be a large diverse group (that is as representative and influential as possible). whoever it is, someone needs to do it…have you seen real housewives of atl – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHGiOeMbDRI
