enjoy the moment

they just don’t matter any more.  our thoughts are somewhere else.  their time was hours before.  or perhaps it will come days later.  but right now, we no longer care about the present moment. culturally, we have gotten to the point where we value everything else more than the moment we are in.

sometimes it’s because we are bogged down by the pressures that await us. like one of the vps at johnson & johnson who once told me the hardest part of his job was paying attention to and dealing with the issues in the meeting he was currently in, as opposed to all of the things awaiting him outside of his door. other times, we get so caught up on the past that it hurts to let it go. so often i see this in the faces of loved ones who have lost people close to them because of death or it was just time to move on.  and sometimes we just want to believe, without proof or reason, the next moment is going to be better than the one we are in. like my nephew who started third grade a week ago and recently told me that things would be “so much better” when he was a fourth grader.  he didn’t know why; he just knew it was true and was confident enough to leave things at “we’ll just see when i get there.”  while there are things popping up here and there to remind us to enjoy the moment (see video and article below) the cultural shift is clear.

and the problem is, we are missing out on the chance to make a difference. in our lives or the lives of the people around us.  the moment right here, is when new memories are made.  the moment right here, is when dreams are made, progress occurs or the lessons are learned that will make us better next time.  the moment right here, right now, is where change, impact and groundbreaking things happen. but we miss out on it, because we are too busy worrying about tomorrow or holding on to yesterday.

what are you doing to ensure you are getting the most out of this moment?  what are you doing to make sure your customers and the people you serve are doing the same?  it’s now or never, the moment is here.
