do you need the hard lesson?

“as you imagine, the last two years have given me time to re-evaluate my life, mature as an individual and fully understand the terrible mistakes i made in the past and what type of life i must lead moving forward.”

-michael vick

i read this quote from michael vick in the back of a magazine the other day.  tiger woods will probably release a similar one within the next two years as well.  lindsey lohan…maybe not.  but all of this led me to one thought: how many of us will determine the right way forward without having to go through the hard lesson?

I think it's a dichotomy in that most people have to endure the “hard lesson” in order to gain the “education” of the lesson learned — but sometimes the lesson can have tremendous circumstances. There's a level of credibility given to those who have proverbially “bumped their head” and learned from it > those who have never endured a hard lesson.

    However

@fave – i definitely feel you. in fact, if i was being truthful to myself, i would say that i am very much about learning things on my own. i can always come up with a reason why i will be different and why the rules that everyone else believes in don’t apply to me. nonetheless, i would say it’s important to choose your battles wisely. it’s through wisdom we should determine when to carve out our own road versus when to learn from the experience of those who have come before us or the smart lessons that are captured in the plethora of books that surround us (the Bible being one of my favorites). thanks for pushing me on this thought.
