please don’t forget to design
the old school philosophy of design only being applicable to architects, engineers, and the likes is dying. design has taken on a much broader definition that is applicable to anyone who is seeking to create change. herbert simon once said: “everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.” if this definition is true (and i believe it is), then we are all designers. it is important to accept this truth because approaching everything you do with a design mentality can and will alter how you see yourself and what you ultimately create.
as marketers, we design ideas and plans that differentiate us in the marketplace and inspire customers to love us.
as leaders, we design organizational structures, visions, and goals that will grow and secure the futures of our companies and thus the people that work for us.
as doctors, we design solutions that breathe health and life into people in need.
as parents, we design the values and key takeaways from life’s many lessons that enable our children to reach their destinies.
as lovers, we design the standards and limitations we place on ourselves to make sure that someone we care about knows they are loved and never alone.
most importantly, as individuals, we design our lives: the boundaries, the dreams, and the opportunities we allow ourselves in order to live a happy life and leave the earth off better than when we found it.
the reality is that we are all designers, so please don’t forget to design.
