derek shivers teaches us, in under 5 minutes, how to start a movement:

“remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals so it’s clearly about the movement, not you…the biggest lesson, if you noticed — did you catch it — is that leadership is over-glorified…it was really the first follower that transformed the lone nut into a leader. so, as we’re told that we should all be leaders, that would be really ineffective…if you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow. and when you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.”

a good friend of mine shared this video with me the other day, and i believe it is a beautiful and excellent example of someone taking the initiative and determining within themselves that they would design their own life. i hope that, like me, you find this video encouraging, inspiring, and relevant to where you are right now in your life. let me know your thoughts in the comments below, i look forward to hearing them.

seth godin says “be remarkable”

a seth godin throwback as he encourages us to stand out, be remarkable, and to live on the fringes. he warns us that building and doing things worth talking about are the only things worth building and doing. in this 15 minute talk he declares that for marketers, being safe is risky and that building average products for average people is a recipe for disaster. what companies can you think of that are cooking a stew that will lead to failure?

but this idea is not only true for marketers; it’s true for you, too. doing average work gets us no where. blending in at work and having no one talk about us will not lead to that promotion we always wanted.

too often we settle for blending in as opposed to doing something remarkable. need i encourage you to choose the extraordinary?

the google job experiment

the u.s. is being divided by those who are coming out of the recession versus those who are still stuck in it. if you find yourself in the latter and are in the job hunt, perhaps you should take lessons from this guy who purchased google ad words of all of the names of the people he wanted to work for so that when they googled themselves they were hit w/ an ad encouraging them to hire him. tough times call for creativity – not another resume submitted to a black box.

a few days ago, i shared daniel pink’s thoughts on how to motivate your employees. today, i’m sharing something from one of my favorite web site’s, 99 percent, on how to motivate yourself. honestly, i’m blogging about this step by step list for self motivation for self promotion for you just as much as i am for myself. i have been in a little rut lately and, well, it’s time to get motivated. who’s with me? not convinced yet? check out the quote at the end of the guide that is attributed to john c. maxwell:

stay hungry, stay foolish

if you have never watched steve jobs’ speech at stanford’s commencement in 2005, you need to. if you don’t have the time to watch it, you can read it. i just watched it again this weekend and the thoughts are invaluable. in his speech job tells three stories in order to communicate these three ideas:

make the best decisions for you that you can, and trust that everything will be okay. “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
find and do what you love. “your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. don’t settle…you’ll know when you find it.”
follow your heart. “remembering that you are going to die is the best way…to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. you are already naked. there is no reason not to follow your heart.”

ultimately he ladders these ideas to one thought “stay hungry, stay foolish.”

triple your rate of failure

just found an awesome post on failure. as of this year, i have come to love the idea of failure because i believe it is so critical to success. anyway, this idea begs you to triple your rate of failure. sound dramatic? i believe in all of it. here are a few of my posts on failure (what are you waiting for? you know my posts are short! you could probably read all 4 in less than 4 minutes…depending on your internet connection):

blogger and now author, jonathan mead just released his new ebook, the zero hour work week. of course, the title is a clear play on tim ferris’s four hour work week , which gets you to his big idea: when you do what you love, work no longer feels like work. his 60 page ebook (did i mention it was free?) covers: his story of liberation, his strategies to make a living on his own, examples of others who did the same, the intersection of talent/passion/pay, and why the world needs you to get there fast. i can’t lie, i’ll be reading it this weekend.
