Fuqua School of Business
I fell in love with marketing the second semester of my senior year at Duke University. Knowing, for the first time in my life, exactly what I wanted to do, I determined the best path was for me to work at the Fuqua School of Business where (1) I could be close to some of the best marketing professors in the world and (2) I could be close to an admissions office that could help me understand how to get into business school at a young age. So that’s exactly what I did. When I wasn’t doing either of the above two, I was doing my day job: managing relationships with companies in the consulting, banking, and technology spaces and trying to generate more business through existing or new clients.
what it taught me?
I wanted to lead, but I was fresh out of school. I wanted to do marketing, but my office wasn’t doing a ton of marketing. I had a boss who wanted fresh ideas and results. When you combine those three things together, it produced an opportunity. I had the chance to do what I wanted to do, as long as I generated results for my leader. And it worked. I was promoted within the first month I was there. I developed processes and systems that had never been created by anyone in my job. So what did i learn? I learned that you can lead regardless of your title. Leadership wasn’t about title, it was about mentality.
